Savoca Sicily

How fun it is to be able to show off that I was in the place where several scenes from a movie that won a million Oscars and more were filmed, starring my favorite actor, Al Pacino…

So, Michael fell in love with Apollonia, he came to ask her hand in marriage from her father, who owns a bar in the center of a Sicilian village. The wedding also took place in a church in the village.

The scenes were filmed in the village of Savoca, near the town of Taormina.

If it weren’t for the movie, probably no one would have come here, but thanks to the movie I got to visit a lovely place.

From Taormina we drive about fifteen minutes north on the coastal road, at some point we turn right and pass through a sleepy coastal town called Porzi Sigolo…. We strolled through the deserted streets, looked out at the sea, and stopped in the church piazza for coffee and a good apple pie.

From there we started climbing with the car on a narrow, winding road. The view was amazing.

We parked in the center of the village of Sabuka, there were almost no people, except for that famous bar, which from the outside still looks exactly like in the movie, except for the thick vegetation.

Everyone stops there to take pictures, and of course I do too.

The place is now run by Lorenzo, who is married to the niece of the original owner, the one during which the film was shot. He is renovating the place and in the future it will have guest rooms. He took me on a tour of the wine cellars and the back garden.

In the bar/restaurant you can eat light meals, drink and indulge in sweets. Inside there is a room full of photos from scenes from The Godfather and there is no doubt, they were very lucky that director Francis Coppola chose this bar to film the film.

Since everyone and his wife stop there to take pictures and also to empty their bladders, they hung the following sign…

From there, climb up a narrow, cobblestone path to the church where Apollonia and Michael’s wedding was held.

Eric and I renewed our vows and then I sent him to the confessional, to confess all the trouble he was causing me.

Friend, contrary to what I read before the flight about this village, that it is overly touristy, the village is charming, I recommend stopping here, the view is amazing, the abandoned houses take great pictures and the good air did it for me!
